Moni

Popped up on the scene.

I bit down on my tongue, tapping my foot uncontrollably against the granite-tiled floors. Ashley was standing over me talking, but I didn’t hear a thing she said. I was seething. Blu, Jayvee, whatever his name was, had me on a hundred. My karma was coming back around yet again. I had flown in earlier, dropped off the kids, and headed straight to Ashley’s house. When I got there, she told me he was nowhere to be found.

Livid, I told her to call him and tell him to bring his ass to the crib. She didn’t get an answer either. It was cool because he had come through soon. He and Mike had some so-called business to handle. I asked Ashley to pour me a glass of wine at eleven in the morning. Usually, I wouldn’t drink this early, but today was an exception. I had texted Mrs. Clarke for words of encouragement or for her to stop me, but she had yet to respond.

The sound of banging on the front door pulled me from my thoughts. Ashley ran to see who it was. “Blu, hey, umm.” I guess she was stalling, but I was already up and headed their way.

“Muthafucka! I can’t believe you.” Blu stopped in his tracks. “I trusted you, and this is how you repay me?” He looked shocked. Part of me wanted to slap the taste out of his mouth, but I didn’t want him putting his hands on me.

“Monica, Moni, what are you doing here?” I guess he had finally found his voice. “Let me talk to you out here.”

“No! Don’t touch me! You’re out here playing me, Blu, like I’m not your wife!” I was now yelling at the top of my lungs. My lips quivered and eyes watered. “I can’t believe you.”

“Monica, give me a second to talk to you.” He was begging me. Blu held on to my hand.

“You’re not even worth it. I hope Angie is worth it.”

“Huh?” I left Blu standing in Ashley’s living room. He wasn’t worth my tears. Blu had hurt me in a way I wasn’t expecting. I guess that was how Tiana must’ve felt when she found out about us. I walked out to the porch, sat on the stairs, and cried into my hands. Blu cowered over me. “Monica, I’m sorry if I hurt you. I swear to God, I ain’t been out here doing nothing to hurt you.”

“You’re a fucking liar.” I reached in my pocket, shoving the picture in his hands. “You think I don’t know about her?”

“Monica, this shit is old. I know you know that.”

“The picture is old, yes, but is the love between y’all old?” I looked into his eyes. “You want to talk? Get to fucking talking.” Blu grabbed my hand. He pulled me along to the rental.

“I’m not trying to talk in front of anyone. Yes, I fucked up by staying out here. I’m not going to apologize for this old ass picture. This shit ain’t about nothing.
